What makes our cakes “ridiculously good” is not just what we put in them but also what we leave out. There are no stabilizers, preservatives, or additives of any kind in any of our products. We use only what you would have found in your great grandmother’s pantry.
In 2010, Lia Altan offered her baking to the public and began taking orders for her popular cakes and desserts. With the support of her husband Marlon and many loyal customers, demand for their products quickly grew. Within 1 year it became necessary to work from their own commercial kitchen and storefront. The Sweet Art of Cake’s first store opened on Mission Boulevard just outside of downtown Hayward in October 2011. In 2014, they opened their store in the Fairway Park Shopping Center. They have been growing ever since, always finding ways to improve their traditional offerings and adding gluten free and vegan products to the menu.

As a little girl who could barely see the tops of the counters, I remember watching my mom put together beautiful wedding cakes for her friends. She would pipe out the most delicate flowers out of royal icing. I would look through the oven window and watch the "glop" magically transform into cake, and smell the butter as she added borders and basket weaving. It's no wonder I've been baking all my life. I can't remember my first cake. It must have been when I was very young. Today I am continually studying and trying out new techniques, materials, and designs. I like the challenge of creating a cake that a customer envisions but I LOVE just having a general theme and letting the cake create itself.
Marlon has baking in his blood too. His grandfather owned a bakery in Guatemala where they baked fresh bread and pastries everyday. Whenever he came to visit them here in the US, he treated Marlon and his sisters to his delicious fresh baked bread right out of their own oven. We’re still trying to get those delicious recipes to continue the family tradition.
Joel joined us as a dishwasher in high school and has moved up the ranks to becoming our lead baker. You won't usually see him as he comes in very early in the morning.
